One of the first areas of our home that needed upgraded was the master closet.

While it is a walk-in, at 4′ x 8′ it is not huge. Plus, there were only two hanging rods, one on a long wall and the other on a short wall. All told, we only had about 7 feet of hanging space and 9 feet of shelf space. Unfortunately, I didn’t think to take before pictures of the closet when we moved in.

I started out by removing the existing shelving, filling the holes and painting the whole space bright white. My parents had given me some leftover wire shelving that they had from one of their projects and I decided to put it to use. I came up with a design that quadrupled the amount of storage space we had in our closet.

We started out by installing two rows shelving around the three full walls, the top row is 12″ from the ceiling. The bottom row is 54″ from the ceiling. This gives each of us 6 ft. of hanging space. The top row also creates a 14′ shelf that gives me tons of space to store my purses, hats and other whatnot I don’t use very often.

On the right side we installed 2 more 4′ shelves, the first 4′ shelf is 14″ below the top shelf, the second is 14″ below that. below that we installed two shelves, upside down and at an angle, with the font faces being 14″ below the shelf above. The upside down shelves act as shoe racks. This side is Scott’s.

On the left side we installed 2′ sections of shelving in the back corner of the closet. I use those shelves for sweatshirts and big heavy sweaters I really only wear in February when it is brutally cold. Only putting shelves on one half leaves open space on half of that wall for hanging dresses, longer sweaters and bathrobes.

I also have 2 shoe racks on the bottom of my side, enough shelving to hold about 1/3 of my shoes. We put a shoe rack on the inside of the door to hold the rest.

Even though the closet is on the smaller side, the addition of extra shelving has given us significantly more storage space that holds most of our clothing. Even though my parents gave us some of the shelving, we still needed to buy 1 more 8′ section which we found at Lowe’s.

Not only did they cut the piece we bought to the measurements we needed, they cut some of the pieces we were re-using, as well. This was a 2 weekend project. One weekend I painted, the following we hung the shelving. This was definitely worth the time and effort. I am so happy with the results I went shoe shopping to celebrate!
