Unfortunately, life isn’t always as fair as we would like and not so nice people do not so nice things. Scott had this sign made for me for my 50th birthday and, 3 years later, someone stole it out of our yard. Two weeks after that they came back and stole the street name sign at the end of our road. We decided then it was time to think about a security system for the house.

Because we live out in the middle of nowhere we also decided on motion activated video cameras. After considerable research, Scott decided on a wireless Arlo system. The cameras can be easily attached and removed from magnetic mounts that we installed in several advantageous, yet inconspicuous places. Scott likes them because they are easy to use, have long battery life and super high-quality video.

So, a couple of months ago Scott and I had just gotten home from the Corn Festival and finished unloading the SUV. Since Riley had been in her cage most of the day so we decided to wander around the yard and let her stretch her legs for a while. Scott decided this would also be a good time to collect our security cameras, bring them into the house and charge them. Although, when he tried to retrieve a camera that was hidden in a clump of bushes, he found it was missing. He dug around in the leaves but still couldn’t find it. He was at a loss.

“Well”, said I, “let’s watch the last video the camera shot and see what happened!” I was sooo excited! I thought someone had stolen it and we had caught the perpetrators red handed on video! All those hours watching “Forensic Files” and learning about crime scene investigation weren’t wasted, after all!

I frantically pulled out my phone, opened the app and scrolled through the videos until I came to the last one filmed by the missing camera. The video was not at all what we expected.

We looked at each other. Were those teeth? Big, giant teeth? That can’t be, that’s crazy! So, we decided to watch the second to last video the camera recorded. Say “Hello” to our little friend!

Because the camera was offline, Scott tried several different things to find the camera. He even built a super sonic router so he could go beyond our internet signal in hopes of picking up an easily identifiable image of the area where the camera was laying. We decided that, when he figured out he couldn’t eat it, he probably dropped it.

Finally, Scott decided the best solution would be to have him pull back the branches while I raked out everything under the bushes on the mound. It only took a minute or two. I found the camera but couldn’t reach it so I sent Scott in after it. Success!!

Yikes! Those really were teeth! Oh well, the skin took a beating but the camera is non the worse for wear! Even if we hadn’t recovered the camera it makes for a good story, even though I don’t know if anyone would have believed it without the video!
